Sexual violence against children is one of the most devastating crimes in our society. It robs children of their childhood, shatters their sense of safety, and leaves deep wounds that can often lead to struggles with trauma, depression, and anxiety (Vera-Gray, 2023). These harms are not just personal, as they impact families, communities, and our nation as a whole.
What the Law Says in Belize:
In Belize, the Criminal Code Chapter 101 Revised Edition (2020) strictly prohibits sexual offences against children. Acts such as unlawful sexual intercourse and indecent assault are serious crimes. It outlines that:
Sexual assault of a child under 16 carries a summary conviction of a term of imprisonment for a term of 7 years or, if the case goes to a higher court and they are convicted, the sentence can be as long as 12 years.
Unlawful sexual intercourse with a child under 14 carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years to life in prison.
Unlawful sexual intercourse with a child aged 14–16 carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 to 10 years.
Rape of a child under 14 carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years to life.
Rape of a child under 16 carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years to life.
Attempted offences are also punishable under the law.
These laws exist to protect our children, but enforcement and accountability remain critical. Too often, predators escape justice, or penalties do not reflect the gravity of the harm caused.
Why We Must Do More?
The consequences of child sexual abuse extend far beyond the moment of the crime. Survivors may carry lifelong emotional, psychological, and physical scars. Communities must understand that silence enables abuse. Reporting suspicions, supporting survivors, and demanding justice are all part of our shared responsibility.
Therefore, as a society, we must demand:
Stricter penalties for offenders, ensuring that those who harm children face the full weight of the law.
Stronger prevention measures in schools, communities, and families.
Timely interventions and survivor-centered support services.
Public education so that every child knows their rights and every adult knows their duty to protect.
Protecting children is not just the responsibility of parents or authorities; it is a moral duty for all of us. When we defend the rights of children, we are defending the future of Belize.
Every child deserves to grow up safe, loved, and free from harm. Together, let us ensure that justice and protection are not only promised in our laws but are enforced in our society.
